Iran's belief in Britain as an arch-conspirator has small historical warrant and is an absurd depiction of modern international relations
Dean Acheson, the great postwar US Secretary of State, observed that Britain had lost an empire and not yet found a role. Iran's leaders disagree. To them, Great Britain is the Svengali of international politics. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader, declared last week that Britain was the “most treacherous” of foreign powers. The massive protests against suspected fraud in the Iranian presidential elections were, in his view, provoked by British perfidy. Alleging espionage (and provoking a retaliatory expulsion of Iranian diplomats from London), Tehran has ordered two British diplomats to leave the country
