EU, Britain, France Condemn Iran Trial: Via Voice of America.

Iran faces international condemnation after opening its second mass trial of political detainees charged with provoking unrest during protests against Iran's disputed presidential election.

Those on trial Saturday included a French woman lecturer and Iranian employees of the French and British embassies in Tehran.

The European Union and Britain condemned Iran for putting on trial French lecturer Clotilde Reiss and the two embassy employees.

Britain Replaces US as Favorite Target of Iran (VoA)

VOA News - Britain Replaces US as Favorite Target of Iran: Via Voice of America.

In the aftermath of the disputed Iranian presidential election, Tehran has hurled some of its sharpest rhetoric not at its traditional nemesis, the United States, but at Britain. Iran accused Britain of instigating protests, arrested some of its embassy workers and expelled a British Broadcasting Corporation correspondent. Britain has now ascended to the top of Iran's enemies list.

Virtually every week since the 1979 Iranian Revolution, Friday prayers in Tehran have been punctuated with the ritual cry of "Marg bar Amerika" -- Death to America. But in recent weeks, that has been replaced by a new slogan -- "Marg bar Ingles" -- Death to Britain.

Iranian officials have described Britain as the most treacherous power and railed against what they claim to be British instigation of protests over last month's disputed presidential election.

Has Britain replaced the United States as the "Great Satan" in official Iranian eyes?

Analysts say Britain already occupies a special place in Iranian political mythology.

Troubled relations between the UK and Iran have hit a new low with the arrest of several local staff at the British embassy in Iran and last week's tit-for-tat expulsion of each other's diplomats. But even before Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader, singled out the UK as the "most evil" country in a recent speech, indeed since before the 1979 Islamic revolution, rows and ructions have been the norm between the two countries.

Often dubbed the "Little Satan," to the "Great Satan" of the US, Britain occupies a special place in Iranian official demonology. Many Iranians are still convinced the BBC helped topple the Peacock throne and bring Ayatollah Khomeini to power, ironic in the light of the role being played by the BBC's new Persian TV channel, a huge irritant to the authorities in Tehran.

Intensified crackdown mutes protests in Iran / Iran also expelled two diplomats from Britain

Intensified crackdown mutes protests in Iran / Iran also expelled two diplomats from Britain: Via Yahoo! News.

CAIRO – Overwhelmed by police and left with limited alternatives, Iranian demonstrators resorted Tuesday to more subtle ways of challenging the outcome of the presidential election: holding up posters, shouting from rooftops and turning on car headlights.

But the restrained expressions of discontent appeared to be scattered as Iran's ruling clerics dealt the opposition new setbacks, making clear they have no intention of holding a new vote and setting up a special court to deal with hundreds of protesters arrested in more than a week of unrest.

Iran also expelled two diplomats from Britain — a nation it bitterly accuses of meddling and spying — and Britain in turn sent two Iranian envoys home.
