Iranian opposition leader Mir Hossein Moussavi plans to form a new political party aimed at reining in the power of the Islamic Republic's leadership, a leading reformist newspaper reported Sunday.

Moussavi told supporters the party will be focused on upholding "the remaining principles of the constitution," according to Etemad-e Melli, a newspaper aligned with fellow opposition candidate Mehdi Karrubi.

He is expected to file papers with Iran's Interior Ministry to establish the party before hard-line incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is sworn in for a new term, the newspaper reported.

Iran's Green Wave / Cover story at "The Nation"

Iran's Green Wave: Via Cover story at "The Nation".

Just before midnight on a Friday evening a week before Iran's much-disputed June 12 election, the initial tremors of the earthquake that has shaken the country to its core were palpable deep in south Tehran, a gritty, working-class section of the city with a reputation for being a stronghold of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Past shuttered shops and empty, debris-strewn sidewalks, a late-night stream of cars, trucks and motorcycles, engines revving, horns honking, roared along the wide boulevard. From open car windows emerged shouts and cheers, raised fists and hands brandishing posters of opposition contender Mir-Hossein Moussavi's bearded, smiling visage. As I traveled north from sprawling Imam Khomeini Square up to Ferdowsi Square and on the miles-long Vali Asr Street, the scene was similar. In a country not known for street politics, the tableau was stunning. My Iranian companion, an older man with years of experience in his country's affairs, smiled and shook his head. "This is something new," he said.

TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) -- Heavily armed police prevented several thousand Iranian protesters Saturday from entering Revolution Square, one of the main protest sites in Tehran, a witness told CNN

About a mile away, police kept the crowd back by throwing two canisters of tear gas at their feet, the witness said.

The Web site of the main opposition candidate, Mir Hossein Moussavi, quoted news reports as saying a flood of people was headed to the capital from surrounding towns.

Two rallies had been scheduled to begin about 4 p.m. Saturday (7:30 a.m. ET) to protest a disputed presidential election, despite stern warnings from Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He said Friday that protest organizers would be held responsible if the demonstrations led to bloodshed.

Two people were hurt in a blast at the mausoleum of Ayatollah Khomeini in southern Tehran, Iran's state-run Press TV reported Saturday.
