EU, Britain, France Condemn Iran Trial: Via Voice of America.

Iran faces international condemnation after opening its second mass trial of political detainees charged with provoking unrest during protests against Iran's disputed presidential election.

Those on trial Saturday included a French woman lecturer and Iranian employees of the French and British embassies in Tehran.

The European Union and Britain condemned Iran for putting on trial French lecturer Clotilde Reiss and the two embassy employees.

The Swedish-led EU presidency said actions against one EU country, citizen or embassy staff member are considered an action against the entire bloc.  It demanded the detainees be released immediately.

VOA News - EU Recalls Iranian Envoys in British Embassy Dispute: Via Voice of America.

European Union nations have summoned Iranian ambassadors to protest the detention of British Embassy staff in Tehran.

Officials say EU members agreed to the move Friday at a meeting in Brussels.

EU officials are considering additional measures including visa bans on Iranian officials.

A top Iranian cleric Friday said that some British Embassy staff will be put on trial for allegedly playing a role in post-election demonstrations. Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati said during a prayer sermon that some embassy employees confessed to instigating unrest. Jannati is close to Iran's supreme leader.

Nine British Embassy staffers were arrested in Tehran last Sunday. Some were freed, but the British government says two are still in custody.

Britain's foreign office expressed concern Friday and said it is investigating reports that the employees face trial.

Swedish PM speaks on Iran. As readers know, Sweden assumed the presidency of the EU on Wednesday.

Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt at a press conference in Stockholm today:

"Iran is a very important country, in the South and in the region, and to understand the world a lot today. I think it was a clear message given in the elections and very clearly also afterwards in the reaction that Iranian people in itself according for reforms and freedom, something we know about, we think it is very important and we stand up for in Europe and we will do so everywhere. But of course we must ask ourselves the question how could we put this and at the same time not coming to a position where we have been before that we polarise Iran from the rest of the world and that we are made an excuse for the use of violence or the use of repression inside Iran. That was the balance we needed to struck in Europe and also in other parts of the world."

The EU is no longer qualified to take part in talks on Iran's nuclear programme, Iran's military chief says.

Maj Gen Hassan Firouzabadi, Iran's chief of staff, accused the EU of "interference" in riots which followed June's disputed presidential elections.

EU states, meanwhile, are considering withdrawing their ambassadors from Iran in a growing diplomatic row.
